Hybrid learning produced an awkward grading problem. Use Frequent, Low-Stakes Checks

The highest-value change in hybrid assessment is frequency. Replace one high-stakes exam with several shorter checkpoints: a weekly quiz, a short reflection, a problem solved in class, a micro-project every few weeks. Low-stakes checks reduce anxiety, give students early feedback, and give you a live signal of who is falling behind before it is too late. They also make academic integrity easier, because each individual item carries less weight and the cost of dishonesty outweighs the benefit.

Build a Feedback Loop, Not a Feedback Event

Feedback only improves learning if students act on it. Structure every assignment so that feedback arrives while the work can still change, and require a brief response: a one-paragraph note on what the student will do differently, or a revision round on the same task. Use simple categories that students understand, such as the argument, the evidence, and the execution, and keep comments specific enough to act on. A model feedback cycle is short: submit, receive comments within three days, revise once, and resubmit a summary of changes.

An Integrity Framework That Holds Online

Online exams still need guardrails, but choose them in proportion to the stakes. For low-stakes work, accept open-book honesty and design questions that reward it. For high-stakes assessments, combine several signals rather than relying on one tool:

  • Randomised question banks and varied datasets so no two students sit the same paper.
  • Identity verification and session monitoring, communicated openly before the exam.
  • Process evidence: drafts, working files, or recorded solution walks for major assignments.
  • Follow-up oral spot-checks with a small random sample of students on any significant grade.
  • A clear academic integrity policy with consistent, published consequences.

Match Assessment to the Learning Mode

Not everything belongs in the same format. In-person time is precious, so use it for the moments that need presence: oral presentations, group problem-solving, labs, and defending ideas. Online time is good for recall checks, drafts, collaboration, and written work. Map your course activities to the right mode, then choose the assessment that fits naturally.
